Magnolia macrophylla

Family:Magnoliaceae
Species:Magnolia macrophylla Michx.
Common Name:big-leaved magnolia
Habitat:Forests.
Associated Ecological Communities:**
Growth Habit:Tree
Duration:Perennial
Category:Vascular
Plant Notes:This species appears to be a rare new addition to the non-native naturalized flora of New York. The population from Nassau County documented by the specimen at BKL from 2000 appears to be naturalized in a forest nearby to a cultivated individual (Andrew Greller personal communication 2010). This population is the basis of a report from Oyster Bay, Long Island by Greller et al. (2006). The "population" from Suffolk County documented by the specimen at CW Post from 1998 also appears to be naturalized. Only one individual was seen when the collection was made (Orland Blanchard personal communication 2010). We have yet to verify these specimens. This species was also reported to occur in Nassau Co. by the Long Island Botanical Society Flora Committee (1996) backed by a specimen collected before 1980 and a report after 1980. The specimen collected before 1980 is likely a specimen housed at OBPF. It appears to have been collected from a cultivated individual at Planting Fields Arboretum (Carol Johnston personal communication 2010). Carol Johnston reports that at this site there are some naturalized individuals that occur near where a cultivated individual used to grow.
