Taxonomic Notes:Magnolia virginiana has genetically and morphologically distinct entities (McDaniel 1966, Azuma et al. 1999, 2011). While Meyer (1997) chose not to recognize infraspecific taxa, others (McDaniel 1966, Tobe 1998) recognize two taxa, a southern var. australis and a northern var. virginiana. Recent research (Azuma et al. 2011) indicates that these two taxa have a significantly divergent chloroplast genome and they may warrant recognition at the specific level. More work is still needed to fully understand the variation within M. virginiana but it appears that there are at least two taxa that deserve recognition at some rank. All New York material is the northern var. virginiana.
Status:Native, Endangered-State, FACW+ (NWI), OBL (NWI), S1 (State Rank), G5 (Global Rank)
